Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate
North Carolina
North Carolina State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are collaborating to develop, implement and study the AGEP North Carolina Alliance model for creating institutional, department-level and faculty change to promote historically underrepresented minority US citizens who are completing their STEM doctoral degrees and progressing into faculty positions.
This alliance was created in response to the NSF’s Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program solicitation (NSF 16-552) The AGEP program seeks to advance knowledge about models to improve pathways to the professoriate and success of historically underrepresented minority (URM) graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty in specific STEM disciplines and/or STEM education research fields.

The AGEP-NC model for change is built upon five core strategies for institutional transformation (Kezar & Eckel, 2002)
- Shared leadership
- Senior administrative support
- Robust (flexible) design
- Faculty development
- Visible action
The AGEP-NC Toolkit provides tools for departments and institutions wishing to implement the AGEP-NC model. The Toolkit includes tools for deans, department heads, faculty change agents, and project coordinators, including examples of successful approaches and readings and resources. Learn More
Faculty Fellows are the heart of the AGEP-NC project. These faculty have made a commitment to work toward making our doctoral programs ones in which Latino/a, Black and Indigenous Amercian students work in an environment where they can thrive. Learn More
Here you can find videos of AGEP-NC community members discussing strategies and their perspectives, readings about diversity and equity in doctoral education, and webinars by national leaders on culturally responsive mentoring and making change in higher education. Learn More
Each participating department develops and adopts a plan to promote the success of Black, Latino/a, and Indigenous American doctoral students, focusing on degree completion and preparation for faculty careers. So far, eleven departments have completed and adopted departmental AGEP-NC plans. Link to Department Plans
